I wanted to embrace the idyll. I wanted to be firmly convinced that Duncan Smoot’s heaven could have existed. I discovered the romantic landscape paintings of Robert S. Duncanson, an African American painter and member of the Hudson River School gave me the sense that Russell’s Knob was imaginable.
